PSI POWER v2 (HAWKWIND COVER)

about

As a kid growing-up in the middle of nowhere Hawkwind (and Michael Moorcock) were my education: I skived off so much high-school I ended up with a social worker. But I learned more from Hawkwind and Moorcock’s Cornelius books than I did from any half-arsed English Shitliture lesson endlessly being made to copy tedious colonial crap out of antiquated text-books.

Through their influence I learned of the existence of such exciting, mysterious ideas as Anarchism, Punk, Gender-fluidity, Feminism, Counter-Culture, Underground music, drone-rock, groove, electronics: music as a political / experimental / energising / dangerous source of energy rather than just Entertainment.

Hawkwind opened my ears to everything from electronic music to Punk: Growing up whenever I would be introduced to new music like Techno / House / Dance / Post-Punk / Dub / Drone / Soundscapes I was better able to embrace it because Hawkwind had trained my ears to say Yes to new noises.

I have always worked hard to not sound like my influences - I want to be inspired by the past to move things forward: our overall sound is obviously inspired by the whole Post-Punk thing, and 90s British Hip-Hop / Breakbeats, Talk Talk, David Sylvian, 90s Warp etc. The eclecticism of our tastes, instrumentation and overall vibes are definitely inspired by Hawkwind’s own.

Nowadays when we play with a mad line-up (with sJewelly playing noise-generators through filters and self-oscillating delays; Jez playing sax through fx, me and Chucky’s heavy bass-lines to-the-front, lots of vocal things going on and Rachela dancing in a way that is confrontational and intense): the Hawkwind influence is obviously there.

Psi Power has been stuck in my head on and off for decades. It was a challenge to sit down and work out the structure and key changes. Our cover version is based on how Hawkwind did it live in the early 80s: It’s obvious a bit out of character for us to have so many specific elements - where the guitar sounds like a guitar etc. - but I think it still comes across as very us too.

lyrics

“The body of man is being altered so that the barrier that presently prevents you from knowing one another’s thoughts will fall. You are being put under pressure in order to increase the speed of your evolution. ” Whitley Strieber. “The Key”.
